Industry Display Case placed at SHS

An industry display case has been placed at Seneca High School (SHS) to educate students on the products made there. The School District of Oconee County (SDOC) hopes to have cases at all of the high schools in the district, says Public Information Officer Dr. Sharon Sanders. “Many of us are guilty of riding by our county’s many manufacturing facilities and having no idea what products are made or what services are provided in them. The SDOC is working with local industry to address this issue. The district feels that raising awareness of the opportunities present in the area is the first step in developing the SDOC’s new NOW program, Nurturing Oconee’s Workforce. One way the district will use to raise awareness among students is to showcase products created by local industries in display cases. These display cases will be placed in prominent places in district high schools. The display case shown above was designed and built for SHS. The case currently houses products from Sandvik Coromant, the first industry to respond to the project. In the SHS case, Sandvik placed Inserts, or cutting tools, in various stages of their life cycles. They also showcase solid carbide drills and mills along with examples of products that are machined with their tools, such as steel shafts, race cars, and airplanes.” The district plans for the displays from Sandvik and other local industries to be rotated through all three high schools each year. “We hope that other industries will be willing to share their products with students in our schools as well. We would love to have enough participation so that we can rotate the contents monthly between our schools so that students learn more about many great industries in our own backyard. We feel it is very important for SDOC students to know about the great careers that exist in the manufacturing facilities right here in the Golden Corner. This is a win-win relationship between the schools and industry,” said Dr. Michael Thorsland, Superintendent of SDOC.
