NRC schedules Meeting to discuss Major Projects at Oconee Nuclear Power Plant

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) hosts a public meeting on May 27 with Duke Energy officials to discuss the status of major projects at the Oconee Nuclear Power Plant. The public session of the meeting is planned for 8am to 3pm with an hour break for lunch around 11:30am. It takes place in the Oconee Office Complex, which is located at 155 East Pickens Highway in Seneca. The public is invited to attend, and NRC officials will be available to answer questions after the business portion of the meeting around 2:15pm. The projects to be discussed include pending plant improvements designed to prevent or mitigate the effects of floods and tornadoes, the Oconee Plant response to changes required after the 2011 Fukushima accident in Japan and the status of a new service water system designed to cool some equipment in the plant. Planned upgrades to the nearby Keowee Hydroelectric Units, which provide backup power to the Oconee Plant, will also be discussed.
