Record Number to compete in Clemson Triathlon

The City of Clemson hosts the largest field of collegiate triathletes across the United States today and Saturday at the 2016 USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships. Nearly 1,350 collegiate triathletes are set to compete at Clemson’s Campus Beach, explains Jamie Cathey, program director for the City of Clemson’s Parks and Recreation Department. “Our main venue is Campus Beach or the Snow Family Wellness Center that is located on Highway 93 in Clemson. For probably the best viewing, I would say if you are on Highway 93, you are going to get a good view of riders coming out on the bicycles and runners coming out. The start/finish line is there on Campus Beach, so you can move up and down Highway 93 freely since we have a full closure; that would be good on Friday and Saturday.” Due to the triathlon, a bridge will be closed to through traffic on Saturday, adds Cathey. “If you are coming from JP Stevens Road on the Oconee County over by High Pointe that bridge across the lake is going to be closed, so you are not going to be able to come across and get to Anderson that way, so that is a super important point for anybody that is traveling from Oconee County into Anderson.” Another road closure is planned for Saturday night in downtown Clemson, but this time for a party, concludes Cathey. “We are closing our race out this year with a Block Party downtown in Clemson. So, College Avenue we have an 80’s band coming to continue on with the 80’s theme. We will have a small section of College Avenue blocked off for the party so that people can move freely, enjoy the band and just celebrate this wonderful two years of the triathlon in Clemson.” To read more about the Triathlon in Clemson visit the city’s website at www.cityofclemson.org.
