40 years in the making

So many individuals who helped that it’s unlikely to name them all – all who in 40 years brought Walhalla to the ground break today for a community center, with a recreation focus but an emphasis on all who are part of the community that the mayor likes to refer to as the Garden of the Gods and a gateway to the mountains. Celia Myers, city administrator, predicts many benefits such as social activities and an emphasis on sportsmanship. It’s to be a multiple-use building on bottom land off SC 28, the Blue Ridge Boulevard – behind the Larry Brandt law office and a stand of trees on the back side of the county’s DSS office. Hogan Construction has the multi million contract. Its head of Upstate construction, Chris Bowen, was the final speaker before men and women grabbed shovels to break ground. Chairwoman Sara Melendez of the city council PRT committee focused on recreation participants, a total of 465 boys and girls who are enrolled in various sports. One of Walhalla’s longest serving coaches and recreation supporters, former city councilman Danny Woodward, expressed the hope that the early 20th century gym building at the end of N. College Street can be saved and find a new use.
