Nate delivers Record Rains to OC

Tropical Storm Nate delivered heavy rains to Oconee County. In addition, a tornado warning was issued for the Upstate of South Carolina during the storm Sunday night. The storm produced over five inches of precipitation in Oconee County, reports Official U.S. Weather Observer Barbara Wilson from her weather station in Walhalla. “5.07 inches!” That is a record amount of rain for Wilson in a 24-hour period. “About the most I have measured at one time, although over a period of days we’ve had more for a tropical storm or a hurricane.” Wilson says Sunday’s storm also delivered more rain in 24-hours than in the previous month. “We haven’t had a significant amount since Irma, which was over four weeks ago.” September was an average month for precipitation, continues Wilson. “Well, we are sort of where we should be 4.63 inches due to Irma and then at the first of the month about an inch and three quarters at that time with some scattered in between, but 4.63 was the total for September.” Rainfall amounts may differ where you live. Wilson and her family, the Brandts, have been recording the weather from Walhalla for the National Weather Service for over 100 years. They are the longest active weather watchers and volunteer reporters for the National Weather Service.
