Yearly Audit underway in SDOC

The yearly audit of the School District of Oconee County (SDOC) is underway, says Finance Officer Gloria Moore. “Every year at this time, we undergo an audit by an outside accounting firm and we use Stancil, Cooley, Estep and Stamey. Right now, we pretty much have a resident accountant in the office checking behind our procedures and behind our transactions to be sure that the reports that we give are fairly presented.” Moore says the SDOC has a good working relationship with Stancil, Cooley, Estep and Stamey and explains the audit process. “If I have questions during the year, they are available to answer, if it is a procedure or something is changing in the accounting world; they are always available for us. They do some planning in the early summer and then in July and August they select some of the schools and they do an audit at those schools. Then they come to our office and we have a place for them to work. They start out with one of the junior accountants and he does a lot of the leg work. Then Mr. Estep will come, probably in a couple of weeks, and he will start reviewing the work that the junior accountant has done and then we will prepare the financial statements together. Those will be ready by Dec. 1. It’s a really good relationship and it has been more than 20 years that we’ve worked with them.” Those financial statements are scheduled to be presented to the Board of Trustees for the SDOC at their meeting in December.
