The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) announces that the state has suffered its first flu-associated death of the season, an individual from the Upstate. DHEC Immunization Medical Consultant Dr. Teresa Foo says unfortunately there are many deaths, hospitalizations and other serious complications of flu each year in South Carolina. “So, anyone can get the flu even if you are healthy. There are some people who are at risk from complications from the flu and those include young children, pregnant women, people 65 years and older and those with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart or lung disease.” Dr. Foo encourages everyone to get a yearly flu vaccine. “So, the best way to prevent the flu is by getting the flu vaccine each year. There are some other tips to remember as well during flu season make sure you’re just generally staying healthy, getting exercise, plenty of sleep, eating well, making sure to wash your hands and stay away from anyone who is sick.” These are the most common symptoms of the flu, continues Dr. Foo. “The most common symptoms of the flu are fever, muscle aches, feeling generally tired, may have a cough or nasal congestion.” Dr. Foo tells where you can get a flu shot. “Flu shots are available at local DHEC Health Departments. The best way to get one at your health department is to call the appointment line at 1-800-868-0404.” DHEC strongly encourages people to get vaccinated now to prevent the flu and its potentially serious consequences. The vaccine takes about two weeks to build up your body’s protection against the virus. For more information about preventing the flu, visit www.scdhec.gov/flu.
