SDOC Superintendent encouraging Reading during Holidays

With students in the School District of Oconee County (SDOC) having three days off for the Thanksgiving holiday, Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland is encouraging students to read over the break from school. “We don’t want them to totally forget about academics. I would suggest maybe a little different focus during the break. Maybe a little bit of studying for certain students that need to keep up but we would love to see our students have an enjoyment of reading. So, pick up something they just enjoy, just that would be a fun read over the holidays, maybe a holiday themed book or something that interests the child. But reading is probably, this is hard to say because I am a former Math teacher, but reading is probably the most important skill that we work with students on during their K-12 experience and we certainly want them not only to be adept at reading just to pass their classes, we want them to enjoy reading and do that continually throughout their life. One quote I am familiar says that ‘Readers are Leaders and Leaders are Readers.’ We want our student to not only be good at reading but we want them to enjoy it, so maybe just pick up a book and enjoy that over the break.” Students in the SDOC go back to school on Monday, Nov. 27.
