Annual State Candlelight Vigil on Saturday

The annual statewide candlelight vigil for impaired driving victims takes place on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 1pm in the Gervais Street Room of the State Museum, 301 Gervais Street in Columbia. This yearly event honors and remembers all victims of impaired driving in South Carolina and around the nation. In 2016, there were 331 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in South Carolina and many more were injured. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) South Carolina hosts the vigil, which allows attendees to speak the name of those they are remembering or honoring as well as hang a heart with their loved ones name on it on the Victim Memorial Tree. The featured speaker this year will be MADD’s National President, Colleen Sheehey-Church, who will share her story of losing her son, Dustin, and to offer words of hope to those working through their grief. MADD’s free vigil is presented by the Yarborough Applegate Law Firm of Charleston.
