Six killed on SC Roadways over Weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of six persons killed on state roadways over the weekend. As of Dec. 17, 929 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 981 highway deaths during the same time period in 2016. Locally, Anderson County reports 42 in 2017 compared to 57 in 2016. Pickens County lists 20 roadway fatalities in 2017 and 19 in 2016. Oconee County has experienced 17 deaths in 2017 compared to 10 in 2016 at this same time. Of the 619 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2017, 297 were not wearing seat belts. Through midnight Dec. 17, 148 pedestrians have died compared to 140 in 2016; 112 motorcyclists have died compared to 147 in 2016; and 18 bicyclists have died compared to 25 in 2016 on state roadways.
