The most recent report from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) shows there have been 5,041 influenza cases reported in the current flu season. Between Dec. 10-16, 1,495 influenza cases were reported from 41 counties, which represents all four DHEC Public Health regions in the state as well as a 56% spike from the previous week. Locally, 16 flu cases have been reported in Oconee County, 36 in Pickens County and 20 in Anderson County. In addition, there have been two flu-associated deaths this season in the state. DHEC Immunization Medical Consultant Dr. Teresa Foo says everyone is at risk of catching the flu. “So, anyone can get the flu even if you are healthy. There are some people who are at risk from complications from the flu and those include young children, pregnant women, people 65 years and older and those with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart or lung disease.” Dr. Foo encourages everyone to get a yearly flu vaccine. “So, the best way to prevent the flu is by getting the flu vaccine each year. There are some other tips to remember as well during flu season make sure you’re just generally staying healthy, getting exercise, plenty of sleep, eating well, making sure to wash your hands and stay away from anyone who is sick.” These are the most common symptoms of the flu, continues Dr. Foo. “The most common symptoms of the flu are fever, muscle aches, feeling generally tired, may have a cough or nasal congestion.” Dr. Foo tells where you can get a flu shot. “Flu shots are available at local DHEC Health Departments.
