SCAJ offering Legal Resources to Victims of Amtrak 91

Sunday’s preventable train collision of Amtrak 91 near South Carolina’s capital city was a tragic event. The victims of this accident and their families will be dealing with suffering, grief and countless other issues for years to come. Hugh McAngus, Jr., President of the South Carolina Association for Justice (SCAJ), said, “Though it is a difficult time for so many in our state impacted by this accident, it is an unfortunate fact that there are often those who look to take advantage of these types of tragic situations. The victims must be vigilant as they work through the medical, work, family, and other matters that they will likely encounter on their path to recovery.” SCAJ, the state’s leading association of plaintiff attorneys, is offering the below best practices and resources for victims and their families: As a reminder, South Carolina lawyers are not permitted to directly solicit clients with whom they have no prior relationship or within 30 days of an event or disaster. If someone you have never heard of is trying to solicit you as a client during this process, especially within the next 30 days, be cautious and consider reporting it immediately to the appropriate authorities. Should you have any legal questions or need to retain a lawyer for loss of work, injury, or other accident-related issues, make sure they are duly licensed to practice law in South Carolina. If you want to know if someone is a member of the SCAJ or would like the contact information for assistance in verifying a South Carolina lawyer’s standing with the Bar, call the SCAJ office at 803.799.5097 and our staff will put you in contact with the South Carolina Bar.
