Three Day not Four Day Weekend in SDOC

A slight change has been made to the calendar in the School District of Oconee County (SDOC). Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland says students will have a three day not a four day weekend. “We have a teacher in service day scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23, and our teachers are going to be busy working on their professional development. Principals across the district have plans for things that they want their staff to work on that day. Then Monday, Feb. 26, was originally scheduled as one of our inclement weather make up days and because we have missed five days this year due to inclement weather that will be a regular school day for our students. So, it was originally planned for a four day weekend and it turns out it will be a three day weekend for students. They’ll get Friday but they have to come back to school on Monday.” A slight change is also being made to the 2018-19 SDOC calendar, explains Assistant Superintendent of Operations Steve Hanvey. “Well, we approved the calendar in the fall and I obviously didn’t pay good enough attention to the State Legislation that says that every even year you have to have the Tuesday of Election Day off. I thought it was every four years for the General Election, so when I proposed the calendar I did not have that day as a day out of school for our teachers and staff, so we have made that adjustment. We had to tweak a little bit with a professional development day and of course we had to add a day at the end of the school year to get that day back. Minor changes but those should be approved and up online in the next couple of days.” To see the complete calendars for the SDOC, visit www.oconee.k12.sc.us.
