Scams increasing with Tax Season

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office continues to hear from citizens regarding IRS scams and those scams usually increase with tax season, says Public Information Officer Jimmy Watt. “The Internal Revenue Service will contact you by mail if there is an issue with your taxes but they will never contact you by phone. Even if there is an issue with your taxes, you do have a right to an appeal but the IRS will not obtain an arrest warrant and threaten you with an arrest, which is fear being used as a tactic by scammers.” To report an IRS scam online, visit the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration’s website at www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml.
