Roadway Fatalities down in the Tri-County Upstate

Roadway fatalities are down in the tri-county area of Upstate South Carolina. According to the most recent statistics from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, Anderson County has experienced seven deaths in 2018 compared to ten in 2017 at this same time. Oconee County lists three traffic fatalities each of the past two years. Pickens County reports three in 2018 compared to five in 2017. As of April 1, 189 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 248 highway deaths during the same time period in 2017. Of the 143 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2018, 75 were not wearing seat belts. Through April 1, 28 pedestrians have died compared to 39 in 2017; 13 motorcyclists have died compared to 21 in 2017; and three bicyclists have died compared to six in 2017 on state roadways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of 11:59pm on April 1, 2018.
