Low Turnout for West Union Election

Maybe voters thought with no opposition that Tuesday’s West Union Municipal Election was a forgone conclusion? But Oconee County Voter Registration and Elections Director Joy Scharich wonders why so few voters cast ballots. “I’m not sure if everybody knew about it or what but we did have a West Union election yesterday. It was the mayor and four council running unopposed. We had a turnout of two absentee and nine people voted in person.” Linda Oliver was re-elected as mayor and all four council members; Bethany James, Tommy Moore, David Scealf and Kelley Weiser, were each elected unanimously to new terms. Only 6.5% of the registered 168 voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s election.
