World of Energy and KOBA to hold Earth Day in May

Duke Energy’s World of Energy at Oconee Nuclear Station is hosting a free Earth Day in May festival, partnering with Keep Oconee Beautiful Association (KOBA) to highlight the shared responsibility in taking care of our piece of the planet. The festival, open to the public, takes place from 10am until 1pm on Saturday, May 5, at the World of Energy. Activity stations will be in the World of Energy butterfly garden to teach children and families what small steps they can take to make a positive impact on our environment. Guests can reserve trees to plant, too. “KOBA is looking forward to our second Earth Day in May celebration with World of Energy. We had a good turn out last year, and the kids seemed to enjoy the different activities,” KOBA Executive Director Lisa Nock said. “This event gives us an opportunity to bring our elementary education program outside of the classroom and get our hands dirty with fun, interactive learning. Duke Energy is a natural partner to help us promote environmental responsibility to our county’s young people.” Visitors to the Earth Day in May festival will participate in activity stations that include: World of Energy butterfly garden tours; KOBA volunteers will teach about native and pollinator plants, and their importance to the local ecosystem. Seed planting station; visitors will get their hands dirty cultivating native varieties of seeds. The art and science of vermiculture; the practice of using worms for composting. Honeybees in action; come see an observation hive and learn about the importance of bees to our environment. Reduce, reuse and recycle activities and games. Demonstrations on taking care of the watershed. See how recycled materials make cool arts and crafts. Tree giveaway and planting information. New this year, Duke Energy will give away 150 trees as part of Earth Day in May. Red maple and redbud trees (bare roots) will be available. Anyone interested in reserving a tree can make reservations by calling the World of Energy at 864-873-4600 or emailing [email protected]. Guests can only reserve one tree per reservation. Reserved trees will be available for pick up from 10am until noon, May 5. Reserved trees not claimed by noon, May 5, will be given away to visitors at the event. All trees not reserved will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis at Earth Day in May. Please note that pick up times for reserved trees are scheduled from 10am until noon, while Earth Day in May continues until 1pm. For more information, visit www.duke-energy.com/worldofenergy.
