Nearly 23% of OC Voters cast Ballots in SC Primary Elections

Nearly 23% of eligible voters in Oconee County cast ballots in the 2018 South Carolina Primary Elections. Of the 10,940 voters, 2,087 cast ballots in the Democratic Primary while 8,853 voted in the Republican Primary. “It’s a good turnout for the mid-year primaries. I think that is above our average. We would still like to see it higher, but it is pretty good.” Oconee County Voter Registration and Elections Director Joy Scharich continued by thanking her staff and all the poll workers for their hard work, which allowed Oconee County to once again be the first county in the state to report its unofficial election results. “I just can’t say enough about the group effort it is between poll workers, commissioners and staff. The poll worker were outstanding today. We had a lot of new people working in roles they had never been in and everybody came through.” Scharich says the results must still be certified. “We will have a provisional ballot hearing on anything that is still to be reviewed on Thursday morning and canvass and come up with the certified totals.” The Oconee County Elections Commission is scheduled to meet Thursday at 9am to certify the results of the 2018 South Carolina Primary Elections.
