OC Sheriff’s Office Deputy involved in Accident after Pursuit

On Wednesday, Aug. 29, deputies from the Warrants Division of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office were attempting to serve outstanding arrest warrants against a subject on Campbell Town Road near Walhalla. The subject, 39-year-old William Roger McGuffin, left the scene in a white vehicle headed towards Walhalla. Deputies attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver did not obey officer commands and did not pull over, upon which a pursuit began that covered Campbell Town Road to Coffee Road to Rock Crusher Road, eventually ending on Wolfers Hollow Road. While on Wolfers Hollow Road, the vehicle driven by McGuffin struck a deputy’s vehicle head on. A short foot pursuit ensued and McGuffin was taken into custody and later transported to Oconee Memorial Hospital due to an issue unrelated to the incident. Neither McGuffin nor the deputy involved in the accident was injured. It is believed that the vehicle that McGuffin was driving may have been stolen from another jurisdiction. The South Carolina Highway Patrol conducted the investigation into the accident. An inventory of the vehicle produced a quantity of methamphetamine, which was turned over to agents from the Narcotics Division, who will be seeking a warrant charging McGuffin with possession of methamphetamine. McGuffin was released from the hospital and transported to the Oconee County Detention Center for booking. McGuffin had an outstanding warrant from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office charging him with grand larceny, plus, three outstanding Westminster Municipal Bench Warrants, two of those for driving under suspension and one for possession of marijuana. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.
