SCDOT gives update on I-85/385 Gateway Project

Upstate drivers should anticipate a detour of I-85 North on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, reports the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). This detour is needed in order to continue with the girder erection associated with the I-85/385 Gateway Project, which is a key part of SCDOT’s 10-Year Plan and the Interstate Improvement Program. The goal of the project is to provide easier travel, provide a financial boost to the local economy, and increase the capacity of this interchange, which has the second highest ADT (Annual Daily Traffic count) in the state. I-85 is in the process of being widened to four lanes from the interchange northbound to Pelham Road. A section of I-85 north and south of the interchange is also undergoing rehabilitation, including cross slope correction. The detour for Tuesday and Wednesday nights will begin at 10pm and will be removed by 5am the following morning. I-85 Northbound will be detoured at the Exit 51 ramp and directed to take Exit 51-B to 385 Southbound. From there, drivers will be directed to Butler Road exit 34 where they will make a left and get back on to 385 Northbound. This will take them back to 85 Northbound towards Spartanburg. Along with that detour, traffic on 385 Southbound trying to go towards Atlanta, will be forced to stay on 385 Southbound. They will also go down to the Butler Road exit 34, where they will go left to return to 385 Northbound. From there drivers will utilize Exit 36-B to get back to 85 Southbound, towards Atlanta. Drivers are asked to travel with care through the interchange during these times. Please observe all signage and devices.
