Nine killed on SC Roadways during Labor Day Holiday

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) announces a preliminary number of nine people killed on state roadways during the Labor Day travel period, which started Friday, Aug. 31, at 6pm and concluded Monday, Sept. 3, at 11:59pm. There were six fatalities during the 2017 Labor Day travel period. Additionally, SCDPS is reporting a preliminary number of 262 traffic deaths during the “100 Deadly Days of Summer,” compared to 237 traffic deaths during the same time period in 2017. The “100 Deadly Days of Summer” runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. As of Sept. 3, 663 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 664 highway deaths during the same time period in 2017. Of the 463 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2018, 235 were not wearing seat belts. Through Sept. 3, 97 pedestrians have died compared to 94 in 2017; 70 motorcyclists have died compared to 78 in 2017; and 12 bicyclists have died compared to 13 in 2017 on state roadways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the SCDPS as of 11:59pm on Sept. 3, 2018.
