Tamassee DAR School Kicks Off Centennial Celebration With April Benefit Concert

(Seneca, SC)——————Tamassee DAR School is 100 years old and the school will be kicking off their centennial celebration with a fund raising concert featuring pianist Calvin Jones on Friday, April 5th at 7pm at the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University in Central. Jason Eller from Tamassee DAR School was on the Coffee Time program recently and shared with us some of the history of the Tamassee DAR School.

Eller says that in 1919, the school was founded to serve Appalachian mountain children, especially girls, and the Daughters of the American Revolution saw a need to say to these girls that there is another way of life as there was no education in the mountains of South Carolina. They wanted to build a school and due to community members, three families in particular, who gave land and other who contributed materials and labor, the school became a reality for those in poverty and those who needed an education.

In the 1930’s, the school became a home for boys as well by renovating chicken coops at that time. Today, Tamassee DAR School offers residential care for children whose families have suffered trauma, plus, an academy program for educational purposes for those in sixth through eighth grades and a life bridge program for children who are transitioning to a college or a work environment.

Tamassee DAR is a private 501-c(3) organization and much of their funding comes through fundraisers such as the upcoming concert plus donations, gifts and sponsorships, plus, a thrift store they operate. Tickets for the benefit concert with Calvin Jones are $10 each with children five and under getting in free. Order you tickets today by going to www.swu.edu/boxoffice.
