SCDHEC Partnering With Several South Carolina Veterinarians To Low-Cost Rabies Vaccinations

(Seneca, SC)——————-The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control are partnering with several South Carolina veterinarians to help pet owners protect themselves, families, communities and pets from rabies.

The participating practices are offering low-cost vaccinations during spring rabies clinics beginning this week.

State law requires that all pets cats, dogs and ferrets are vaccinated for rabies. And even though it is not state law, DHEC recommends that owners also vaccinate horses, livestock that have frequent contact with humans or that are particularly valuable and animals used for raw milk or raw milk product production.

Rabies vaccinations for pets and animals also help to protect humans as hundreds of South Carolinians undergo preventive treatment for rabies every year due to exposure or suspected exposure to a rabid animal.

In 2018, there were 100 positive cases of rabies confirmed in animals across the state of South Carolina.
