SCDHEC Asks For Citizens Help In Helping To Track West Nile Virus

(Seneca, SC)——————-The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is advising South Carolina residents that they can assist the agency as they track the West Nile Virus this spring and summer by submitting certain species of dead birds for lab testing.

The surveillance program allows SCDHEC to better understand where and when there is an increase in West Nile Virus activity. And since mosquitoes become infected with the disease when they feed on birds that carry the virus in their blood, an increase in dead birds can help to lead to local mosquito control programs that help to protect humans and other animals.

In 2018, a total of 87 birds from 18 counties were submitted for testing.

SCDHEC remind citizens not touch birds, dead or alive, with bare hands. Make sure to wear gloves and to use doubled, plastic bags.
