The Staggering Numbers Behind Graham’s Primary Victory

Columbia, South Carolina – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham’s (R-South Carolina) victory in yesterday’s Republican Primary was historic, and the numbers illustrate a party that is unified, energized, and itching for November.

“I  was very honored to have received such overwhelming support among Republicans in the largest turnout of a non-presidential Republican Primary in South Carolina history,” said Senator Lindsey Graham. “What does this mean?  It shows massive enthusiasm among South Carolina Republicans to continue confirming conservative judges, cutting taxes, rebuilding our military, and creating jobs.  Republicans in South Carolina are excited about the opportunity to reject socialism and big government solutions.  Republicans are busting at the seams to vote in 2020.”

Key Highlights

  • Turnout of 464,329 was highest ever for a non-presidential primary in South Carolina.  This shows massive excitement and engagement by Republicans.
    • Yesterday’s turnout was 42,078 more than 2010 gubernatorial primary (422,251).
    • Yesterday’s turnout was 96,346 more than 2018 gubernatorial primary (367,983).
    • Yesterday’s turnout was 147,340 more than 2014 senate primary (316,989).
  • Senator Graham’s support among Republicans has never been higher.

    • 68% is 51 points higher than the 2nd place finisher at 17%.
    • 68% is 12 points higher than the 56% Graham received in 2014.
    • Graham won every county.
  • Senator Graham received nearly as many votes yesterday as the entire Republican field received in 2014 (313,956 yesterday compared to 316,989 in 2014).
  • Senator Graham received 51,620 more votes than Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden received from Democrats (262,336) in the nationally-hyped 2020 SC Democratic Presidential Preference Primary and 41,577 more than Hillary Clinton received (272,379) in the 2016 SC Democratic Presidential Preference Primary.
  • Turnout in yesterday’s primaries for Republicans (464,329) was 158% higher than Democrats (292,300).  This does not bode well for Democrats in November.

“Democrat Jaime Harrison has spent $3.2 million on ads but he hasn’t mentioned that he’s a Democrat in a single one of them,” said Communications Director T.W. Arrighi.  “Why is Harrison afraid to mention his party affiliation or his day job as Associate Chairman of the Democratic National Committee?  And I won’t even get into why he doesn’t mention that he’s the only Democratic candidate for Senate who has received a donation from Hillary Clinton’s PAC.”
