OC Sheriff’s Marine Unit promoting Water Safety

With the summer boating season well underway, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit has been patrolling the waters around the Golden Corner.  The goals of the Marine Unit are very simple: to provide safety for families and individuals who are on and around the water and to maintain the beauty of the view.  One of the main goals of the Marine Unit is to have a much greater presence on the water this summer, not just on weekends, but on weekdays as well, explains Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Jimmy Watt.  “The unit will provide courtesy boat inspections for boaters at various landings throughout the summer.  The Marine Unit also assists the Department of Natural Resources with boating safety and regulations. The Marine Unit will also be handing out brochures that contain a lot of valuable information for boaters and recreationalists on the lakes and rivers this year.  The information contained in the brochures covers safety tips, a map on the back of the brochure, what is required by South Carolina law concerning a boating checklist and some recommendations for citizens as well, plus important phone numbers for the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and Tow Boat U.S.” The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources encourages everyone on the water to wear a Personal Floatation Device.  Make sure that it is wearable and of the proper size for each person.  Sizing is based on body weight and chest size. Always tell friends or family where you are going on the water and when you plan to return. Carry a cell phone, sunscreen, and stay hydrated.
