Former Clemson Student sentenced for Felony DUI

A former Clemson University student has been sentenced to 20 years following a guilty plea in the case of a DUI involving a death.  21-year-old Patrick Michael McCool of Vienna, Virginia entered a guilty plea in the case involving an October 2012 accident, which claimed the life of 22-year-old Tyler Sands of Pennsylvania, a senior at Clemson University. McCool was the driver of the car, which hit a tree on Shiloh Road, killing Sands, the passenger in the vehicle. Both men were legally drunk at the time. The sentence of 20 years is the maximum under state law, but McCool’s sentence has been suspended to 5 years to be served and 5 years probation.
