Four killed on SC Highways over weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces four people being killed on state roadways from Friday, August 16, at 6pm until Sunday, August 18, at midnight. As of August 18, 443 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 523 highway deaths in this same time period in 2012. Oconee County has experienced one highway fatality in 2013 compared to ten in 2012 at this same time.  Pickens County lists ten deaths in each of the past two years at this time.  Anderson County reports 17 traffic fatalities in 2013 compared to 27 in 2012. Of the 298 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2013, 180 were not wearing seat belts.  Through midnight August 18, 47 pedestrians, 71 motorcyclists and 8 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways.  These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of midnight August 18, 2013.
