Historic Pendleton Walking Tour

Have you ever wished you could see the history of the Old Pendleton District, now known as Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties, through the eyes of those who lived it? Put on your walking shoes and break away from the bustle of 21st Century life for a two-hour tour of the Pendleton Historic District.  Wearing period dress, docent Ellen Harrison will meet you at Hunter’s Store at 125 East Queen Street in Pendleton to escort you on a guided tour of the Town of Pendleton.  Established in 1790, the town is unique in that the entire town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Along the way, you will hear the story of early life in many of the Pendleton’s 18th and 19th Century historic structures.  Through Ellen’s dialogue, you will learn about the Scots and Irish settlers who first came to the area and about the wealthy, and sometimes not so wealthy, Charlestonians, who built summer homes here to escape the Lowcountry’s heat and “bad air.”  Tickets are $5 per person, and tours will be limited to the first 30 people who purchase tickets, so be sure to sign up early.  You can save $1 off the second tour when you purchase tickets the same day for both the Pendleton Historic Walking Tour and the Bart Garrison Agricultural Museum of South Carolina. (For Saturday tours, this offer will be honored the following Tuesday at the Bart Garrison Agricultural Museum.) Pickens County Museum, Hagood Mill Historic Site, and Oconee Heritage Center will give a 10% discount on the day of purchase when you show your receipt for the Walking Tour.  Call 864-646-3782 for details or to reserve your tickets. The Fall Walking Tour Schedule: 10am on October 11, 2013; 10am on October 12, 2013; 10am on November 8-9, 2013; 10am on December 13-14, 2013.
