Two weeks ago marked the first anniversary of the homicide of an elderly woman near Westminster. Joann McCarthy’s death remains under investigation by the Oconee Sheriff’s Office. The 74-year old McCarthy was found at her home on Creekwood Lane. At first, no obvious injuries were evident, but an autopsy showed death from a single gunshot, and the case was ruled homicide. Despite appeals to the public and an investigation that continues today, the case has not been solved. Jimmy Watt, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said, “We are following up on any leads that comes into us. If anyone has information regarding this homicide, they are welcome to contact our Criminal Investigations Division at 864/718-1052 or Crimestoppers at 1/888-CRIME-SC.
