Bobcat Boys Track Team wins State Title

The Seneca High School (SHS) varsity boys track team won the AAA State Championship on Saturday afternoon at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, reports Dr. Chris White, SHS Varsity Boys Track Coach. The men scored 71 points, 5 points ahead of runner up Broome High School. Going into the final event of the day (the 4×400 relay), the score was tied 66-66. The Bobcat 4×400 team of Cameron McCutcheon, James Gibson, Noreaga Alexander and Elijah Stewart finished 4th (3:30.14) to tie up the championship. The Bobcat scoring was led by individual state champions Rome Tabron in the discus (143-11) and Cameron McCutcheon in the High Hurdles (14.54). Senior commit to Southern Wesleyan Elijah Stewart was also a big point getter for the Bobcats, finishing second in the 1600 meters (4:30.36) and third in the 800 meters (2:00.10). Fellow senior Freddy Cleveland gave himself a wonderful birthday present by finishing second overall in the discus (139-7), and Trevon Jenkins finished as runner up in the triple jump with a personal best jump of 45-9. Rounding out the scoring for the Bobcats were Drew Boggs (5th place in Pole Vault; 12-6), Bryce Hamby (8th place in Pole Vault; 12-0), JJ White (7th place in Shot Put; 45-2), and Devonte Henderson (8th place in Shot Put; 42-1). The 4×800 relay team of Will Dodd, Sam Dodd, James Gibson and Elijah Stewart set the tone for the entire meet Friday evening running a school record time of 8:07.00, pushing a strong Bishop England team until the finish. All four legs ran their best time of the year, and in the final leg Elijah Stewart and Bishop England’s Sam Boykin took the baton at the same time. Both ran an incredible leg (Stewart’s split was 1:57.6), and although the Bobcats finished second, they ran well beyond what was expected of them and the rest of the team followed suit. The team will celebrate with a wonderful group of seniors at the Track and Field Banquet on May 21, at 6pm at Trinity Baptist Church.
