“Caravan” Needed Police Escort At Start of Event

A group of people hoping to draw attention to efforts to create an Oconee Commission on African American Affairs organized a “Caravan for Change” that made it’s way through Oconee County Saturday evening. The motor pool departed from the Westminster Depot at 6:00 pm and went to Walhalla and Seneca. Organizer Betty Jo Smith said that there was a brief moment for concern to the participants, but credited Westminster Police’s presence at the Depot parking lot that ensured the caravan started smoothly. Smith said she’s gotten mostly positive feedback from government officials about the possibility of an African American Commission, but she said that she received an email recently questioning why why there should be a commission for one group of people, based solely on race, when there are aren’t corresponding commissions for others…

In all, about 15 vehicles took part in the event.
