(Seneca, SC)——————-The Oconee Joint Regional Sewer Authority is asking citizens today, along with their pets, to avoid contact with Martin Creek between Wells Highway and Lake Hartwell. The Sewer Authority issued a statement earlier today stating that a sewer line break occured yesterday afternoon at the intersection of Wells Highway and Stonegate Drive. The sewer line was ruptured and caused a spill of approximately 40,000 gallons of wastewater.

According to Chris Eleazar, Executive Director of the Sewer Authority, the flow was diverted to a one-million gallon emergency storage tank until all repairs are made. SC DHEC was notified and both agencies will be working on the cleanup. Samples from the stream will be taken to monitor the water and signs have been placed in the vicinity alerting those to avoid the area and affected waterways.

Chris Eleazar, Executive Director for the Joint Regional Sewer Authority, will comment during the newscast in the 5pm hour Friday on 94.1 The Lake
