Clemson University conducting Firefly count

Researchers at Clemson University are asking for the public’s help in counting fireflies.  Scientists are concerned about a possible decline in the number of fireflies and want to know if population growth and human activity is creating an impact on habitats. Researchers are asking South Carolinians to join the annual “Firefly Count” on Saturday, June 1 from 5pm to 11pm.  It is simple, just go to any location and write down the number of fireflies you see for one minute. Then submit your findings online to www.clemson.edu/public/rec/baruch/firefly_project/firefly_survey.html. Researchers are also asking you to report if you do not see any of the insects. Early summer, especially late May to early June, is considered the prime season to spot fireflies. This is the fourth year that Clemson University has organized the Firefly Count, and the second year that the count has been conducted statewide.
