Confirmed Measles Case Reported at Clemson University; Contact Tracing Underway
Clemson University officials were notified by the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) of a confirmed measles case involving an individual affiliated with the university. The infected person is isolated in accordance with DPH requirements, and DPH is actively conducting contact tracing, notifying potentially exposed individuals via email, and issuing isolation or quarantine protocols as needed.
Measles is contagious from four days before until four days after rash onset, with isolation for infectious cases lasting until four full days post-rash; quarantine applies to exposed individuals without documented immunity and extends 21 days from last exposure, though a dose of MMR vaccine within 72 hours of exposure can prevent quarantine.
According to recent Student Health Services data, nearly 98% of main campus students have documented immunity. The university emphasizes that the health and safety of the campus community is its top priority and directs students, faculty, and staff to Student Health Services resources and DPH measles updates for additional guidance.
