Construction Update on New Walhalla High School

Now that the rain has stopped, progress is picking up on construction of the new Walhalla High School.  Oconee County Schools Assistant Superintendent of Operations Dr. Michael Thorsland gives details in this update. “It is going very well.  After the summer where we had a lot of rain, I think we got behind by 45 days at one point but because the weather pattern has returned to a more normal pattern for our area of the country, we have been able to make great progress.  If you ride by there on Highway 11, you will certainly see the building coming up out of the ground now, we have two story walls up and I think they are even working on a second story floor.  So, it is progressing very well.” A recent cooper theft from the site has Dr. Thorsland asking the community to keep watch on the property, especially over the weekend.  “There are three drives along Highway 11 and we have more than a half a mile of road frontage on Highway 11, so it is very difficult to secure a site like that just because of the size, 94 acres with all of that frontage on Highway 11 there are access points into the site.  I would encourage the community to help us.  There are cables across the driveways during non-work times, so weekends for example you cannot just drive into the site on the driveways.  So, if community members see activity going on when the cables are across the driveways, there is a good chance that person should not be in there and we would appreciate calls to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, they are always really good to help and we are appreciative.” The new Walhalla High School is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015.
