CU Students have Turkeys to sell

Why eat a store-bought turkey when you get a fresh, free-range bird from the Clemson University Poultry Science Club? The Clemson University Media Relations Department reports that orders are being taken now. To purchase a drug-free “Tiger Turkey,” contact faculty sponsor Mickey Hall at 864-656-4022 or [email protected].  “We have a limited number of birds and we have to take orders ahead of time,” Hall said. The club will need a name, mobile number and email address. The deadline for ordering is November 18th. The cost is $60 regardless of size, and the club takes cash or check only. The birds will be distributed between 10am and 6pm November 25th and 26th in the lobby of Newman Hall. You can do good by eating well. Money raised from the turkey sale is used to support Poultry Science Club activities. Students travel to Atlanta to attend the International Poultry Exposition, where they sit in on seminars and apply for internships and permanent positions in the poultry industry. Students also sponsor a farm family at Christmas and support 4-H poultry activities.  Students raise the day-old turkey hen poults donated by Prestage Farms in Camden. On the Saturday before Thanksgiving, students process the birds in the Clemson University Meats Lab, and they bag them on Sunday in bags donated by Sealed Air Corp. (Cryovac) in Duncan. “This is truly a South Carolina product from start to finish,” Hall said.
