Disturbance inside OC Detention Center

Inmates assaulted correctional officers Sunday afternoon at the Oconee County Detention Center. The E-911/Communications Center received a call for service around 4:22pm at the Detention Center in regards to an altercation. Law enforcement officers from the Walhalla Police Department and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Detention Center and EMS units were notified and stationed outside. Within 30 minutes, the staff was able to de-escalate the situation and take control. The entire detention center was put on lockdown even though the incident occurred in one of the male units housing 16 presentenced inmates. At approximately 5pm, the inmates were all secure back in their respective cells. Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw reports that paramedics on the scene treated those who were involved and two correctional officers along with two inmates were transported to Oconee Memorial Hospital where they are being treated. Sheriff Crenshaw says that the public was never at risk for any potential escape. Investigators are following up with interviews to determine criminal charges and an internal review is underway by the command staff.
