Don’t answer Calls from Numbers You don’t Know

Scammers work 24-hours a day, seven-days a week trying to steal your money, that is their job. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office continues to educate residents about the latest scams reported in the area; however, there is something that you can do that could reduce the amount of scam calls you receive, says Public Information Officer Jimmy Watt. “If someone calls you from a number you do not recognize, do not answer the phone because what that may do is that could open you up to more scams, possibly. If they call and they don’t get anybody, they may think it is not a working number. It may not stop all the calls, but you may reduce the number of calls that you get.” The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reports that scammers can spoof numbers to make it appear that they are calling locally or from inside the United States, but they may be calling from another country or not where the call appears to originate from, so let your answering machine take a message and if it is someone you know and you feel it is safe, you can return the call.
