Duke Energy announces Temporary closure of FAll Creek Access area (South) to install fencing; closure begins sunday, October 27th

(Seneca, SC)———Duke Energy has announced in a press release yesterday that starting Sunday, October 27th, Fall Creek Access Area (South) will be closed temporarily to install fencing. According to the press release, the installation of the fencing is to prevent pedestrian access to the peninsula from the main access parking lot. Duke Energy is also scheduled to do some shoreline stabilization work.

The temporary closure is scheduled to last until December 20th.

The press release says the work is an effort to prevent future drownings, however, the peninsula will remain accessible by boat for bank fishing and wildlife viewing.

Oconee County Council Chairman Julian Davis addressed Council County and those in attendance during Tuesday night’s Council meeting about Duke Energy’s decision regarding Fall Creek and then spoke to 94.1 The Lake after the meeting about the decision.

“It’s not going to stop drownings. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do, as long as you have water, you are going to have drownings,” says Chairman Davis. “But, we want to do everything we can to make it as safe as possible.”

“What are things that we can do to keep people from walking in that specific area that cannot swim? And that is what we have tried to do is to try to keep people out of that water that cannot swim,” according to Davis.

Duke Energy says that the public can still use the Fall Creek North Access Area at 595 Shallow Ford Road in Salem during the closure of the South Access Area.
