Earthquake reported near Lake Jocassee

Lake Jocassee experienced an earthquake Monday evening, tells Mikayla Kreuzberger in the Corporate Communications Office of Duke Energy’s World of Energy. “The United States Geological Survey did post that a small 2.2 magnitude earthquake was detected near Lake Jocassee. It did not affect Oconee Nuclear Station and wasn’t detected by any of our on site monitoring equipment. The earthquake didn’t meet the criteria for required inspection of our dams, but in an abundance of precaution all of our dams were inspected and are safe. Duke Energy is committed to keeping its neighbors safe; safety is our first priority.” The earthquake was reported around 5pm on the eastern shore of the lake. However, earthquakes below 2.5 magnitude are not usually felt by people but can be recorded by seismograph.
