Eight killed on SC Roads over weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces eight people were killed on state roads and highways from Friday, May 3, at 6pm until Sunday, May 5, at midnight. As of May 5, 216 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 281 highway deaths in this same time period in 2012.  Oconee County reports one fatality in 2013 compared to six in 2012 at this same time.  Pickens County has experienced seven highway fatalities in each of the past two years at this time.  Anderson County lists eight fatalities in 2013 compared to 17 in 2012. Of the 158 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2013, 97 were not wearing seat belts.  Through midnight May 5, 27 pedestrians, 24 motorcyclists and 4 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of midnight May 5, 2013.
