Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day

The Oconee Heritage Center and Patriot’s Hall, Oconee County’s Veterans Museum, are partnering to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of The Great War, also known as World War I. The community is invited to join them for events throughout Veterans Day weekend, which is Nov. 9-11, 2018. All events are free and museum admissions are also free. On Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, enjoy Movie Night at the Museum. At 7pm, see Sergeant York at the Oconee Heritage Center. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. This is a free event. On Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, Poppy Day takes place from 12:30-1:30pm, where you can make paper poppies for commemorative wreaths at both the Oconee Heritage Center and Patriot’s Hall. Kids are welcome. At 1:45pm, join them for a ceremony as they place the handmade wreaths at the veterans monument at the Oconee County Courthouse. At 2:30pm, Brock Lusk will present Tigers in the Trenches at Patriot’s Hall. Then at 3:30pm, Jacques Macy will discuss WWI Trench Art at Patriot’s Hall. On Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, Veterans Day will be celebrated at both museums. At 11am, there will be a ringing of the bells. At 1pm, a Veterans Day parade take place on Main Street in Walhalla. Then from 1-3pm, Patriot’s Hall will be serving refreshments.
