Five killed on SC Highways over weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces five people were killed on state roads and highways from Friday, June 28, at 6pm until Sunday, June 30, at midnight.  As of June 30, 337 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 414 highway deaths in this same time period in 2012.  Oconee County lists one highway death in 2013 compared to eight in 2012 at this same time.  Pickens County reports eight in 2013 and ten in 2012.  Anderson County has experienced 14 highway fatalities in 2013 compared to 21 in 2012. Of the 234 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2013, 141 were not wearing seat belts.  Through midnight June 30, 37 pedestrians, 51 motorcyclists and six bicyclists have died on state roads and highways.  These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of midnight June 30, 2013.
