Five killed on SC Highways over weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces five people being killed on state roadways from Friday, August 23, at 6pm until Sunday, August 25, at midnight. As of August 25, 456 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 541 highway deaths in this same time period in 2012.  Oconee County reports one highway fatality in 2013 compared to ten in 2012 at this same time. Pickens County has experienced ten deaths in 2013 compared to eleven in 2012.  Anderson County lists 18 highway fatalities in 2013 and 28 in 2012. Of the 307 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2013, 183 were not wearing seat belts.  Through midnight August 25, 51 pedestrians, 72 motorcyclists and 8 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of midnight August 25, 2013.
