Five killed on SC Roadways over the Weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of five people killed on state roadways over the weekend. As of July 1, 483 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 519 highway deaths during the same time period in 2017. Locally, Anderson County reports 24 roadway fatalities in 2018 compared to 23 in 2017 at this same time. Oconee County lists ten in 2018 and seven in 2017. Pickens County has experienced seven roadway deaths in 2018 compared to thirteen in 2017 at this same time. Of the 343 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2018, 172 were not wearing seat belts. Through July 1, 69 pedestrians have died compared to 72 in 2017; 49 motorcyclists have died compared to 55 in 2017; and eight bicyclists have died compared to nine in 2017 on state roadways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of 11:59pm on July 1, 2018.
