Greenville Deputy-Involved Shooting Under Investigation

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office is investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night at Greenville Inn & Suites on South Pleasantburg Drive. Deputies were searching for 45-year-old Sean Michael Scates, identified as the suspect in an armed robbery that took place Thursday morning at a Shell station on Old Easley Bridge Road in Pickens County.
The suspect fled in a dark Nissan Pathfinder, later found at the Greenville hotel. When deputies approached, the suspect exited with a firearm, prompting the shooting. Scates suffered a gunshot wound and died at the hospital shortly after 3 p.m. No deputies were injured.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating, and involved deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave per standard procedure. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an internal review.
