Groundbreaking for Phase One of the Palmetto Trail System

The Palmetto Conservation Foundation, Oconee County Chamber of Commerce, and City of Walhalla announce the groundbreaking for Phase One of the Palmetto Trail and Stumphouse Tunnel Trail System is planned for 11am on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The partners will break ground on the new Palmetto Trail passage through Stumphouse Tunnel Park, transforming the Walhalla park into a regional destination. The Palmetto Trail will become the spine for a state-of-the-art mountain biking trail system for beginners to advanced riders and enhance the park’s current system of hiking trails. The new passage is the first part of a planned 16-mile extension of the Palmetto Trail from Oconee Station State Historic Site into downtown Walhalla. The Palmetto Trail is South Carolina’s mountains-to-sea hiking and biking trail. The Trail runs about 500 miles from Walhalla to Awendaw on the Intracoastal Waterway in Charleston County. The groundbreaking takes place at the Picnic Shelter in Stumphouse Tunnel Park, located on Stumphouse Tunnel Road off Highway 28 about 7 miles north of Walhalla. The picnic shelter is near the parking lot.
