Holiday Season creates opportunities for Thieves

The Holiday Season is upon us and area law enforcement agencies are reminding residents to be mindful of thieves.  Statistics show a high percentage of home burglaries occur in November and December. Area law enforcement agencies try to be extra vigilant during the holidays but they also say people can help prevent becoming a victim.  Here are a few tips: Be sure to lock all doors and windows when leaving your house. Do not openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in a front window visible from the street. Do not advertise your absence. Use an inexpensive light timer when you are away and ask a neighbor to pick up newspapers and mail. If you go out for the evening, turn on your porch lights.  When electronic gifts are received, make sure you record their serial numbers and keep that list in a safe location. After Christmas, do not pile up empty gift boxes on the street with the garbage.
