Identity released in Chattooga River Death

The identity of the man who died Monday afternoon on the Chattooga River has been released.  Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis identified the man as 64-year-old Ralph Neal Head of Madison, Georgia.  A post mortem examination concluded that he died as a result of freshwater drowning.  His manner of death is classified as accidental.  Head was canoeing on the river with a friend and his son, Monday afternoon. As they approached Sandy Ford, Head’s canoe apparently overturned.  He was spotted floating in the river in no apparent distress. According to witness statements, a short time later, it appeared Head’s legs became entangled in an undercut of rock in the river and the current pushed him underwater.  This is the second drowning in the river in two months and the third since July of last year.
